Mojo's
Bar & Grill Review -
If
word of mouth means anything then Mojo's
in Mossman is surely ahead of the game.
Indeed, it’s something of a Douglas
Shire institution; and they certainly do
crowd pleasers. Mojo's is classic FNQ,
relaxed, unpretentious, quietly
achieving a reputation for its blend of
surf’n’turf, pasta and kid friendly
cuisine. |
For
those of you looking to find a sliver of
genuinely local flavour, a trip to the cane
town of Mossman and a pitstop at Mojo's Bar
& Grill is a must. There is an
‘honesty’ here that is immediately
appealing, a welcoming, family oriented vibe
that puts you at ease.
However,
that casual atmos does not come at the
expense of taste. Mojo's popularity is built
on food, after all. A no fuss lunch classic
like salt and pepper squid is a case in
point, the nam jim and the tangy lime
mayonnaise taking it up a few notches from
the local pub.
Another
fine example of the Mojo's style is the
potato gnocchi. Simple, yet with its
flourish of blue cheese and caramelised
pear, given a layer of gourmet finesse. The
seafood antipasto plate follows the theme,
in that it’s a straight forward affair but
with a few little touches.
They
also do fried brie, (with cranberry sauce,
walnuts and an orange vinaigrette), which is
a truly evil treat. It might not be the
ideal weight loss choice but it’s a
particularly luscious and lascivious entrée
which, to be fair, you really ought to try.
Insofar
as a signature dish is concerned, the Mojo's
reef and beef is probably best qualified.
The sirloin is served with roasted garlic,
aioli fries and drizzled with a red wine
jus. Its counterpart is crayfish, which, in
comparison, is an deliriously velvety and
delicate match to the strong flavours of the
steak.
Meanwhile
the chilli prawn spaghetti has the warmth
and welcome of traditional Italian but with
brighter notes provided by the bok Choy and
toasted sesame seeds. (My partner and I both
wanted more.)
After
all that the simplicity of the chocolate
fondue rounded things out nicely. What was
really noticeable was how good the chocolate
was. Thick but not too sweet it was warmed
so as to keep its lustre and rich colour.
Mojo's
is also seriously good value; but of course
it’s the food that keeps the locals coming
back … and coming back.
