Being
able to share nifty little tapas plates in the lush paradise
of the tropical rainforest is a very cool thing. It’s like
someone took a chi-chi cafe/restaurant, crossed it with a
cool after hours wine bar and transported it north. The only
thing they left behind was the attitude, which makes Whet a
very relaxed, tasty hang out indeed.
The
menu is a likewise friendly selection of Mod Oz, Medi, Asian
and seafood faves. Having recruited executive chef Evan
Seaward, (a ten year Port Douglas veteran), Whet’s fare is
both gorgeously presented and thoughtfully concocted.
Evan’s
creative flare with food is obvious from the delicious
sesame and cumin crumbed veal loin, served with truffled
white polenta, roast peppers, micro herbs and coconut cream
to the amazing eye candy that is the bitter chocolate
pyramid for dessert. (They top this with a Persian
style fairy floss making it even harder to say no to.)
Lunches
have you salivating for their already famous tequila prawns.
Now, we’ve all had prawns, and probably in many guises,
but Whet’s variation is a palate exciter, the sea salt
tang of the prawns and the hot spirited highs of the liquor
sitting wonderfully well together.
Of
the daily tapas dishes we found ourselves lured to the
classic patatas bravas, (crispily quick fried potato cubes
with a touch of peppery lift) and the more modern duck money
bags. Here the Asian influence shines through, adding a
regional sidenote to the more traditional Hispanic ideas
.
What
really got us going though were the sexy sounding cocktails:
Whet Dream, Whet T-Shirt, Whet Season, etc. As colourful as
the surrounding rainforest, they were all deliciously
naughty. (Good thing we weren’t driving.)
Whet
is Cape Trib’s most tastefully unfussed restaurant.
Treading a good middle ground between rainforest luxe and
city cool, it has a welcoming, ‘sit down and chill’ vibe
with some great tunes and luckily very comfy chairs, (which
came in handy after the lavish cocktails.)
